This gun was shipped to W. E. Smith in care of Walter Tips . The gun arrived at Austin, Texas on December 11, 1901. The gun is factory engraved with silver finish and mother of pearl with ruby eyes in the carved buffalo head . The barrel is 5 1/2 inches long and is in 45 caliber . William Smith was chief of detectives in El Paso, Texas before he joined the Texas Rangers in 1911 . It is believed he carried the gun earlier as U. S. Marshall .
